The goal of this seminar is to articulate, in a comparative context, some of the connections between landscape and literature. While this topic has been seen as particularly important in the United States, it holds a place in the literary traditions of other nations as well. Possible paper topics for this seminar might include (but not be limited to) the following:

• the land's ability to hold, show, and conceal history
• depictions of landscapes in colonial and post-colonial contexts
• connections between the land and spiritual practices
• the textual "mapping" of specific geographies
• invented landscapes
• border landscapes
• earth and water
