Sexing Nationalism: (En)Gendering the (Post)Colonial Nation

The configuration of the nation-state as a space that concerns itself with sovereignty, whether locally, transnationally or geopolitically, is often at odds with its supposed "others" in terms of national historiography. As Anne McClintock, among others has pointed out, in thinking through the time of the nation, men and women are positioned differently: placed discretely, for example, upon the terrains and timeframes of metonomy and metaphoricity, respectively. This panel invites papers which examine the impact of gendered national constructions in colonial/postcolonial contexts. Some topics may include:
