To mark the occasion of the assisted suicide death of New Wave's premiere theorist and practitioner, Jean-Luc Godard, I invite papers and proposals that take up the dialectical relationship between the Marxist, anti-formalist positions pronounced in his features and "essay films", the many interviews, reviews, and critical writings, most notably his 1970 Afterimage manifesto "What is to Be Done?" and the seemingly counter-intuitive love affair with Hollywood, evidenced in those same features and in his analysis of Hawks and Hitchcock in the eight part video series Histoire(s) du cinéma. All approaches are welcome.
