About

Welcome to Brill’s Literature and Cultural Studies

Literature and Cultural Studies at Brill are central to our mission of publishing superior scholarship that addresses the complex needs and struggles of the ever-changing cultural landscape of a globalized world.

Anchored in well-established critical and comparative publications, this portfolio experiences dynamic expansion and diversification following these core principles:

Social responsiveness: titles like Dutch Racism or a series like Studia Imagologica uncover the legacy of racism or national stereotypes in cultural discourse.

Interdisciplinarity: we pioneered with series like Studies in IntermedialityEnvironmental studiesTranslation StudiesCritical StudiesWord and Image Studies, and recently added Narratives & Mental Health, which in turn responds socially to the increase in need for mental healthcare.

Global perspectives: in our review and selection process we stimulate interaction between different schools of thought, by means of diverse editorial boards, but also in our authorship when we commission new projects. For instance, the Cultural Histories of the Avant-Garde - decentralizes the study of the avant-garde, and our Handbooks in Memory Studies combines Area Studies with Memory Studies, bringing in authors and editors from the regions being studied.

We believe these are the key factors to truly understand and learn from each other’s cultural expressions and sustainably serve the academic community.

We publish in English, French, Spanish and German.

To keep updated on our new publications, strategic plans, and conference visits, you can subscribe to the bimonthly Literature and Cultural Studies Newsletter.
