Pre-conference workshop: Building Intellectual Life Beyond The University
Description
If the university has become increasingly inhospitable to those seeking an intellectual life, is there any hope beyond it? It is increasingly clear that the time for simply imagining alternatives is long past: we have to actually build them.
Opening this workshop, Organizers from the Mimbres School for the Humanities will lay out their model for funding teaching and research outside of the university system and discuss how it has produced a lively intellectual culture with different pressures and norms to the university. They will then lead a discussion covering both practical aspects of building and running an organization and cultivating a base of support as well as theoretical reflections on what different modes of economic organization might mean for the disciplining structures of scholarly inquiry. Following this, we will collectively model some of the variety of forms intellectual projects might take outside of the university, and consider what would be required to finance them and to develop them into sustainability.
