The Horst Frenz Prize Citations 2019

What I found so original about Tingting Hui's discussion of Yoko  Tawada's works (several of them), one judge wrote, was its interrogation  of both translation and literature itself in the consideration of Tawada's  writings in Japanese and in German, her adopted language. She  compared Tawada's experience of speaking a foreign language to tasting the "contours of words" and swallowing them, "so that the flesh of words can be transformed into the nutrition to be circulated through the body, and further to become part of the human flesh."
