Teaching Life Skills Through Ukrainian and Ukrainian-American Poetry
Abstract
The anthology Tiny Flames: Voices from Ukraine (2024), is a collection of poems translated from Ukrainian to English. Three of the “budding” poets in this collection, Lilia Chernenko, Oleksii Dolgulou, and Julia Gupaliuk, are students at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The poems are political because they teach a lived history of war. The collection is teachable in that the poems are political. However, the greater challenge in teaching political poems is conveying to students the transferability of studying political poetry. To counter student intimidation or student apathy , I add Ukrainian American poetry and apply Jennifer Fletcher’s Kairos Analysis technique to the lesson. In this session, I will share strategies to helps students ask probing questions that are applicable cross-disciplinarily.
